See-through – A Poem

Silent nights haunt me the most.

The times when it’s just me,

my cats,

and my apartment

are the nights where the desire

for a drowning

or warm flesh (or both)

become as overwhelming as

a rampaging herd of elephants.

The herd is one mind and one need,

transparent and desperate, destroying

the alternate desire for solitude.

My cats gather on my legs, nuzzling

my hands for affection.

I give them the attention faithfulness deserves.
