No Subscription – A Poem

My co-worker’s daughter is 11

and smarter than half the adults

on the planet.

This 11-year-old already knows

her career path but she doesn’t

know about the detours

life’s road workers throw up

when construction (or destruction) work

is arranged by the

universe. But she doesn’t subscribe

to fairy tales or false hope or

her own pride.

How can she figure out by 11

what I’m still working out

in my 30s?
