Lazy Day – A Poem

Science fiction, creature feature

with Dr. Paul Bearer

on a hot Sunday afternoon;

with fresh Kool-aid and

a sleeping mother.

Frankenstein meets Dracula today.

The makeup is horrible: the monster

looks like a reject from

a teenage horror camp and

Dracula has a curly afro.

My brother mimics the monster,

staggering about like our dad

when he’s had seven or eight beers.

Mom still sleeps, even the noise from

us and the TV and the dog doesn’t wake her.

She sleeps more and more since

Dad left.

He’s like Dracula in the movie, I guess,

a bloodsucking fiend.

But he can live

in the sun and crosses don’t work. At least Dracula dies in the movie.
